Look out for these signs of serious tyre damage

The importance of a high-quality set of tyres in good condition cannot be overstated. While the bolstered designs of Michelin tyres ensure remarkable longevity and performance, it’s not always possible to avoid every hazard on the road. Here are some common forms of tyre damage that can occur, and how you can spot them.

Impact/sidewall damage

Impact damage usually results from a high-speed impact with a kerb or pothole, or from approaching an obstacle at the wrong angle, which pinches the sidewall of the tyre. This causes damage to the casing of the tyre and usually creates an externally visible bulge on the sidewall. Signs of a scuff mark near the bulge or a dent on the wheel above it are additional signs to look out for.

You can prevent impact damage by driving carefully and avoiding obstacles, and if you must mount a kerb, do it as slowly as possible at an obtuse angle. It’s dangerous to ignore a tyre with impact damage since it will deteriorate further and ultimately fail. If you suspect impact damage on one of your tyres, have an expert examine it as soon as possible.

Punctures

A puncture can be caused by any sharp object, but might not always be noticeable immediately. If a nail or similar object gets lodged in the tread, you might only notice a gradual loss of pressure. If the puncture is difficult to find, you can use your hand to feel for the escaping air or pour some water over the tread and look for bubbles. In some cases, the object will miss the airtight lining or create a near-perfect seal, resulting in minimal air loss or none at all. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore it.

It’s best to avoid driving on a “slow puncture” as it could worsen the damage beyond repair. A quick and temporary plug fix at a service station could buy a little time but you will need to have the tyre removed and properly patched with a mushroom plug at your nearest dealer or replaced if needed.

Cuts and gashes

Driving over broken glass, sharp metal or jagged rocks can result in a gash or rip in your tyre. Head straight to your nearest dealer if you find a cut, even if there is no air escaping (i.e. the airtight lining is still intact). Continuing to drive on it is sure to exacerbate the damage and could lead to the tyre failing completely.

Safe when worn

While life’s twists and turns can be full of surprises, Michelin strives not only for unrivalled longevity but unprecedented safety, right up to the very end of a tyre’s lifespan. Our designs and materials ensure a robust performance across our product range and our run-flat tyres can save you the hassle of becoming stranded on the roadside with a flat.

But if you find any signs of damage, don’t hesitate to visit your nearest dealership for a free tyre inspection. It only takes a few minutes. Find your nearest dealer now.
